Face in human antomy
Arterial supply of face:
1- Facial artery (in the face):
Ø It arises from anterior aspect of ECA.
Ø It enters the face along the antero-inferior
angle of masseter muscle, 1 inch in front of the angle of the mandible.
Ø It ascends on buccinator, in front of the facial
vein in a wavy course (to allow for facial expression).
Ø It runs 1 cm behind the mouth angle, ala of the
nose.
Ø It ends near medial angle of the eye as angular
artery.
Ø Branches of the facial artery in the face:
1.
Inferior labial: To lower lip.
2.
Superior labial: To upper lip, gives septal branch to nasal septum.
3.
Nasal: To the nose.
4.
Angular: To the medial angle of the eye.
2- Transverse facial artery:
¦ It arises from superficial temporal artery.
¦ It passes transversely over masseter, below the
zygomatic arch & above the parotid duct.
¦ ends by anastomosing with other arteries which
supply the face.
3-
Zygomatico-orbital: (From
superficial temporal artery). It supplies the orbicularis oculi.
4- Infra orbital: emerges from infraorbital foramen ,
termination of the maxillary artery which comes out from the infra-orbital
foramen. It is divides into 3 branches:
a- Palpebral branch for the lower eye lid.
b- Nasal branch for the side of nose.
c-
Labial branch for the upper lip.
5-
Buccal: arises
from the maxillary artery , It supplies the skin of the cheek.
6-
Mental: It
arises from the inferior alveolar artery (from maxillary artery) , to the chin
& lower lip.
7-
Supratrochlear & supraorbital branches of ophthalmic A. to upper eye lid.
8-
Dorsal nasal branches
of ophthalmic A. to dorsum of the nose.
Lymphatic drainage of the
face:
œ upper part :
- upper eyelids ,front of auricle & lateral part of cheek drain into the preauricular LNs
œ middle part :
- lower
eyelids , the nose ,medial part of cheek, upper lip and lateral parts of lower
lip →
drain into
the submandibular LNs .
œ lower part :
- central part of the lower lip & chin drains into the submental LNs
submandibular
LNs
,preauricular LNs &submental LNs drain into
upper deep cervical LNs .
Dangerous area of the face:
- Triangular area in the middle part of the face around the nose and upper lip. It is dangerous because infection in this area can spread & reach the cavernous sinus ( leading to thrombosis ) through :
Ø Facial vein → deep facial vein → pterygoid venous plexus → emissary
vein through foramen ovale → cavernous sinus.
Ø Facial vein → Ophthalmic
veins which end in the cavernous sinus
